Great Ocean Road (Melbourne part 2)

Hey y'all!

Melbourne-viikonlopun ainoalle kokonaiselle päivälle, eli lauantaille, olin varannut ohjatun tourin Great Ocean Roadille. Mietin pitkään haluanko maksaa itseni kipeäksi kyseisestä reissusta – kohokohta on kuitenkin vaan katsoa meressä olevia kiviä – mutta näin jälkikäteen oli kyllä ehdottomasti joka pennin arvoista! Sitä paitsi jos olisin jäänyt vaan kaupunkiin koko päiväksi olisin tuhlannut rahat moninkertaisesti shoppailuun ;)

Saturday was my only full day in Melbourne. I had booked a tour to Great Ocean Road for the day. And it was definitely worth every penny!

Usually hotel brekkies are my favourites, but this was a bit of a disappointment...

Firma jonka kautta matkustin oli Wild Life Tours, ja oppaanamme oli ihanaakin ihanampi Simon. Tutustuin jo pick-up –paikalla espanjalaiseen tyttöön, jonka kanssa bondattiin tosi hyvin. Hengailtiinkin sitten oikeastaan koko päivä yhdessä. Matka alkoi siis Melbournen keskustasta, ihan mun hotellin edestä. Ensimmäinen tunti oli oikeastaan aika tylsää. Kesti hetki päästä keskustasta varsinaiselle Great Ocean Roadille, ja ensimmäisellä osuudella senkään varrella ei ollut paljoa nähtävää. Opas sanoikin, että jos aikaisen aamun vuoksi väsyttää, nyt olisi hyvä hetki nukkua ne päikkärit.

Great Ocean Road on 243 kilometriä pitkä tie, joka rakennettiin vuosina 1919-32 sodista palanneiden sotilaiden voimin. Se on omistettu ensimmäisessä maailmansodassa kaatuneille australialaisille sotilaille, ja täten Great Ocean Road pitää hallussaan maailman suurimman sotamuistomerkin asemaa.

Great Ocean Road on jaettu kahteen osaan, joista ensimmäinen on nimeltään Surf Coast. Ensimmäinen stoppimme olikin siellä sijaitseva pieni kunta nimeltään Anglesea. Paikka on tunnettu siitä, että surffimerkkien Billbongin ja Rip Curlin ensimmäiset outletit sijaitsivat kyseisessä kylässä – kertonee siis myös jotain  siitä mitä kyseiseen kylään tullaan tekemään. Pysähdyimme Surf Beachille juomaan morning tean (eli kahvin haha) ja ottamaan valokuvia.

I was travelling with a company called Wild Life Tours. Our guide was lovely Simon! I met a Spanish girl already at the pick up point and we made friends. The rest of the day I was just hanging with her. Our trip started from the CBD of Melbourne and from there we headed towards Great Ocean Road. The first hour was a bit boring, nothing much to see. Simon said (hehe) that it would be a good time for nap if someone was feeling tired.

Great Ocean Road is 243 kilometers long, and it was build between 1919 and 1932 by the soldiers returned. It is dedicated to soldiers killed during World War I. That makes it the largest war memorial.

Great Ocean Road is divided in two parts. The first one's called Surf Coast. Our first stop was a small town called Anglesea in there. It's famous for having the first outlets of both Billabong and Rip Curl. We stopped by Surf Beach to have our morning tea (coffee) and to take some photos.

Sitten ajeltiin vartin verran ja pysähdyttiin Memorial Archille, josta tuo tämän postauksen ensimmäinen kuvakin on. Jossain vaiheessa matkaa joku kommentoi, että ompas isot aallot. Simon vastasi tähän, että "Voi kuule, eihän tuo ole vielä mitään! Aallot voivat olla helpostikin 8-12 metriä korkeita!"

We kept on going for another 15 minutes and stopped by Memorial Arch, which is the place where I had the first pic of this post taken. At some point one of my fellow tourist mates said something about how big the waves were. Simon just said that 'Oh no, this is still nothing! They can easily be between eight and twelve meters!'

It was good sitting on the front seat – got to take the ultimate tourist photos also on the road ;)

Seuraava stoppi oli jälleen melko pieni kylä nimeltään Lorne. Oikeastaan kaikki kylät joissa pysähtelimme ovat näin syystalvella jopa alle tuhannen asukkaan paikkakuntia, mutta kesäisin lomalaisten ja surffarien saapuessa väkiluku ylittää jopa sadantuhannen! Lornessa pidimme vain lyhyen valokuvaustauon.

The next stop was again a very small town, called Lorne. Actually, all the towns where we stopped have a habitation of only around 1000 people on the autumn/winter season, but when the summer starts and all the people on summer vacations and all the surfers arrive, the population on the areas gets somewhere around 100,000 people! In Lorne we only stopped to take a few pics.

Sitten taas tienpäälle... Ajeltiin puolisen tuntia Kennett Riverille, jossa pysähtdyttiin tsekkailemaan alueella asustelevia villikoalia! Laki kieltää näihin koaliin koskemisen, vaikka ne olisivatkin kosketusetäisyydellä (ei tosin koskenut meitä tällä kertaa). Nämä Victorian territoriossa elävät koalat ovat Australian suurimpia – täällä Queenslandissa isoimmatkin koalat ovat noin 6kg, kun taas Victorian alueella elävät voivat painaa jopa 18kg! Lisäksi nämä koalat saattavat olla hieman ärtyisiä, ja siitäkään syystä niihin ei saa koskea, toisin kuin esimerkiksi niihin QLD:n koaliin, joita saa ottaa syliin valvotuissa olosuhteissa.

Alun pienen turhautumisen jälkeen onnistuttiin bongaamaan kaksi koalaa eukalyptuspuista! Toinen kavereista söi ja liikkui melko aktiivisestikin, kun taas toinen näytti valtavalta karvapallolta nukkuessaan täysin liikkumatta! Alueella oli myös paljon paikallisia papukaijoja, sekä muita lintuja. Nämä linnut tekivät todella läheistä tuttavuutta ihmisten kanssa lentäen päänpäälle, olkapäälle tai kädelle! Periaatteessa niiden ruokkiminen on laitonta, mutta turistit tekevät sitä silti.

Time to hit the road again... We drove another half an hour and there we were at Kennett River, where we stopped to see some wild koalas! It's against the law to touch these koalas even if you could do so. These koalas that live in Victoria are the biggest in Australia – here in Queensland the biggest ones are around 6kg whereas the koalas in Kennett River can weigh even 18kg! They can also be a bit grumpy which is the other reason why you can't hold them like you can the Queenslander koalas.

After a brief frustration we managed to spot two koalas in an eucalyptus tree! One of them was eating and moving quite much whereas the other one was sleeping steadily on a branch, looking like a big ball of fur! There were also heaps of parrots and other birds. These birds were very brave when it came to humans. They flew on top of your head, shoulder or hand! Basically, feeding them is illegal but many tourists still do it.

Jatkettiin matkaa seuraavaan kylään, Apollo Bayhin, joka tunnetaan myös nimellä Paradise by the sea. Syötiin siellä lounas paikallisessa ravintolassa. Käytiin myös kaupassa ostamassa juotavaa ja naposteltavaa, sillä reitin viimeinen kauppa sijaitsi täällä, ja edessä oli vielä noin kahdeksan tuntia matkantekoa.

Sitten suunnattiin Shipwreck Coastille, joka on siis toinen alueista johon Great Ocean Road jakautuu. Tie kulki hetken matkaa sisämaassa, ja pysähdyimme matkan varrella sademetsään nimeltä Mait's rest, jossa teimme pienen kävelylenkin. Olen ollut aikaisemmin Queenslandin sademetsässä, Springbrookin kansallispuistossa, mutta Victorian sademetsässä näytti aivan erilaiselta! Mielenkiintoinen kokemus kaiken kaikkiaan.

Then we continued our trip to the next town, Apollo Bay a.k.a Paradise by the sea. In there we had lunch in a local restaurant. We also went to buy some soft drinks and snacks since this was the last place where you there was a shop, and we still had about eight hours on the road ahead us.

Then we headed to Shipwreck Coast which is the second part of the Great Ocean Road. The road went inlands for a while, and in there we stopped for a walk in a rainforest. There in Mait's rest it looked completely different than in the rainforest in QLD which I have visited earlier!

Sitten ajeltiin taas tunnin verran, jonka aikana allekirjoittanut nukahti. Enkä ollut muuten ainoa. Aikainen herätys, täysi vatsa, koko päivän kestänyt ulkoilu ja kylmä sää sai kaikki tuntemaan itsensä hieman väsyneiksi. Ja kun heräsin tie kulkikin taas meren vieressä. Tuota pikaa oltiinkin jo 12 apostolin luona. Perille päästyämme alkoi sataa, ja tuuli oli jotain aivan järkyttävää!! Ulos bussista oli silti mentävä, koska tämä oli ultimaattisen turistipäivän huipentuma, ja kaikki ryntäsivätkin ulos kamerat kourassaan.

We drove an other hour, during which I fell asleep. I wasn't the only one, though. When I woke up the road went along the shore again. In no-time we were stopping again. It was time for the ultimate tourist moment of the ultimate tourist day! The weather was absolutely bloody horrible, but since it was the 12 Apostles we all just rushed out!

Luckily, we didn't see any!

Sitten jäljellä oli enää kaksi pysähdystä ennen (bussin) keulan kääntämistä takaisin kohti Melbournea. Ensimmäinen stoppi oli paikka nimeltä Loch and George, jossa meitä odotti jälleen upeat näkymät! Mutta hitto että toi tuuli oli kyllä jäätävä ja aallot sen mukaiset! Viimeinen stoppi oli London Bridge, tai nykyisin oikeastaan London Arch "sillan" romahdettua. Sitten hylkäsimme rannanmyötäiset tiet ja matkasimme moottoritietä pitkin takaisin Melbourneen. Mahtava päivä!!

Then we only had two more stops before going back to Melbs. The first one was a place called Loch and George, where beautiful views greeted us once again. But damn how the wind was freezing and the waves were big! The last stop was London Bridge, or London Arch nowadays, after the collapse. Then we abandoned the road by the shore and headed back to Melbourne by highway. What a great day all together!!
